PEDAGOGICAL APPROACHES IN MEDICAL EDUCATION

The Pedagogical Approaches in Medical Education module is specifically designed for postgraduate learners, including resident physicians and Level II specialist trainees. Its primary objective is to equip learners with essential principles and methodologies for effective teaching and learning in medical education.

This module provides opportunities for participants to engage with both theoretical foundations and practical applications of medical pedagogy. Through this process, learners are expected to enhance their analytical abilities, critical thinking skills, and capacity to apply educational principles in clinical teaching and learning environments.

Module objectives

  • Explain the characteristics of adult learning and education.

  • Apply basic concepts and principles of assessment in evaluating theoretical knowledge and clinical skills of medical students.

  • Apply theoretical foundations of active learning strategies and constructive feedback in teaching knowledge and skills to medical students.

  • Formulate learning objectives for both theoretical and practical teaching sessions.

  • Construct multiple-choice questions aligned with the learning objectives of the lecture.

  • Characteristics of adult learning and education

  • Writing learning objectives for medical teaching sessions

  • Developing multiple-choice questions based on instructional objectives in medical education

  • Applying evidence-based medicine in teaching and clinical practice, with practical implementation in both medical education and patient care

  • Active learning methods and constructive feedback strategies in teaching knowledge and skills to medical students

  • Core concepts and principles of assessment in evaluating theoretical knowledge and clinical competencies, including methods for delivering constructive feedback to students

Blended teaching approach

  • Didactic lectures: Provide foundational theoretical knowledge.

  • Group discussions: Analyze participants’ teaching activities, exercises, and case-based scenarios.

  • Practical exercises: Engage in self-directed practice and in-class group-based teaching exercises to develop and refine instructional skills.
